My journey to becoming a specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist:

I was raised & educated in Canberra, making my way to Melbourne after acceptance into the Victorian College of the Arts studying classical ballet. Following a short professional career, I was accepted into medical school at the University of Melbourne. I subsequently found my calling, immersing myself in world of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After being named on the Dean’s Honor’s List in 5th & final year, I went on to compete my Residency at Austin Health before applying for Specialist training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Over the following 6 years, I broadened my skills in obstetrics, gynaecology and fertility with training at the Mercy Hospital for Women, the Northern Hospital, Austin Health & Bendigo Health.

Private O&G Practice

In 2004 I was awarded my Specialty Fellowship and commenced my Private O& G Practice initially located at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Fitzroy. For the past 20 plus years, I have had the pleasure of caring for and delivering many babies at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Epworth Freemasons, the Mercy Hospital for Women, Frances Perry House and North Park Private Hospital. For those families, I will always remain grateful for allowing me to be part of the amazing experience of the birth of their baby (or babies!).

Fertility/IVF

In 2018, I expanded my area of expertise in Fertility/IVF under the supervision and training of Dr Lynn Burmeister CREI at Number 1 Fertility. I undertook a formal Specialist Proctorship through Epworth HealthCare in 2019. I initially worked at Number 1 Fertility. It always seemed like an obvious progression for me after meeting many couples over the years with subfertility or infertility.

In June 2024, I joined Melbourne IVF as an accredited Fertility Specialist. Melbourne IVF offers more than 40 years of experience and are pioneers in fertility treatments. Melbourne IVF has a world leading laboratory which sets the benchmark in laboratory standards and innovative science, giving the best possible chance of success. The scientific and clinical expertise provided by Melbourne IVF and its greater network through Virtus Health, is outstanding. This is an exciting opportunity for me and I am privileged to be working with such an exceptional team.

I have special interests in elective egg freezing, as well as those couples that are experiencing primary infertility, secondary infertility or subfertility. I also offer my support and expertise to single women or same-sex couples choosing to become a mum. As such, I provided the full range of services from ovulation induction through to IVF/ICSI. Please see my ‘Services’ section for further details.

My Research Endeavours

Over the past two decades, I have cared for women with all types of pregnancies. What I found challenging to understand was those women who experienced spontaneous miscarriage or spontaneous preterm birth with no warning. Completing a postgraduate doctoral degree (Doctor of Medicine) in 2007 in this area has given rise to ongoing research opportunities within the University of Melbourne’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health. I am now an Associate Professor (Clinical) with the University. Specific research has focused on the exploration and investigation of cervicovaginal fluid for biomarkers that may be predictive of spontaneous preterm birth and preterm, pre-labour rupture of the fetal membranes. I acknowledge the research funding of over $3,200,000 that has been provided to me over the past 20 years from the Medical Research Foundation for Women, the Shepherd Foundation, the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Normal Beischer Medical Research Foundation and Carmentix Pte, Ltd (Industry funded grant) / University of Melbourne. I have authored many scientific publications, reviews and abstracts. Ongoing research in this area continuing

Norman Beischer Medical Research Foundation

In 2018, I was appointed to the Research Committee of the Norman Beischer Medical Research Foundation. The Foundation funds clinically based scientific research in the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology/fertility and newborn health by leading and emerging researchers and uses this research to educate and inform medical practice in Australia and elsewhere. My role is to review these applications for potential funding.

Outside of Fertility/IVF

I still attend ballet classes when I can, have a family that supports me day and night and have a terrific network of friends. My partner and I are also proud supporters of the Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club (perhaps the Canberran in me) and over the years, we have sponsored several players. I love to learn and view life as an adventure, always striving to be the best I can for the people around me
